My floor is engineered — how do I know if it can be sanded?
The number that matters is the wear layer, not the total board thickness. At 4mm or more you can sand two or three times over the floor’s life. At 2 to 3mm you might get one careful pass. Below 2mm it cannot be sanded at all, and any damage is permanent. The easiest check is at a threshold or vent cut-out, where you can see the board in section — the real wood layer sits above a plywood or HDF core and the line between them is usually visible. We check this before quoting.
What a job in Croydon usually involves
- Survey and moisture check. We measure board thickness and check whether the floor has been sanded before. On a board already sanded two or three times there may not be enough timber left, and we will say so.
- Repairs first. Loose, split or missing boards are fixed before any sanding. Sanding a loose board just produces a smooth loose board.
- Dust-free sanding. Coarse grit to remove the old finish and damage, then progressively finer grits until the surface is closed.
- Gap filling, if wanted. Resin and sanding dust for hairline gaps, timber slivers for wider ones. Engineered floors should generally not be gap filled; they are designed to move slightly and rigid filler pushes the joints apart.
- Finish. Hardwax oil, lacquer or oil, two or three coats.
How long it takes and what it costs
